LT Abell's Crew In the afternoon of 11 Jul 44, 2nd LT James R. Abell was taxiing B24J, 44-40300, around the perimeter track to take-off position. The pilot was using excess power settings so as to keep the eingines from cutting out, that the engines of his aircraft with Chandler-evans carburetors have a tendency to cut out below 1300 RPM if not thoroughly warmed up before taxiing. Before reaching the intersection of runways 33 and 01, a/c 42-52760, flown by the Zuker crew stopped in front of #300 to obtain permission to cross the intersection. LT Abell was unable to stop soon enough and ramed into the tail of #760 causing considerable damage to both aircraft. (NARA via Roland Andrews). |
