This is a P-47D that was at Station 174. The aircraft was used by pilots to get a little "stick time" in a fighter, or for "riding heard" on the bombers as they formed for their missions. It was even a good place to catch a nap.

The "WW" on the tail indicated this ship was "War Weary", and not intended for combat use. The markings are those of the 486th in 1945. 42-74680 served with the 353rd FG 352nd FS at Raydon where it was coded SX-I. There is also a record of it post war with the 352nd FS as well where it was SX-W (Photo Courtesy of Jim Little, 835th. History courtesy of Peter Randall of www.littlefriends.co.uk).
