AN EIGHTH AAF BOMBER STATION, England-- "Keep 'Em Flying" is more than an empty slogan to these men, members of an engineering section of a squadron commanded by Major Winfred D Howell, Foley, Alabama. These are the men who make sure a maximum number of their squadron's aircraft will be in shape for a mission. This section led the sections of all other squadrons in an Eighth AAF group commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Glendon P. Overing by consistently having the best maintenance record. In thirty combat missions the huge B-24 Liberators, on which they work, went out and returned every time without losing a single plane or crew member. For the first 27 missions, aircraft of the squadron were forced to turn back singly only five times because of mechanical trouble. Pictured above (left to right) — preparing to mount a propellor on one of their Lib's engines are: Corporal Henry J. Elliott of Wilmington, Delaware and Sergeant Herbert F. Basener of Meservey, Iowa.

Sgt. Basener, 23, mechanic, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Basener of Meservey, Iowa. Prior to entering the AAF in November 1942, he worked on the family farra. In his spare time he did cabinet work.
