"5 Grand" was celebrated as the 5,000th B17 manufactured during the war.  Those who helped build her were encouraged to sign her hull.  The weight of ink caused a loss of performance, but were never removed.  The aircraft was originally flown to England by the LT Unger crew.  The aircraft was handed off to the 96th Bomb Group.  Photo credit: Peter Stackpole of Life Magazine.  Copyright, Life Magazine.
