Radar technology was in its early stages of development during WWII.  Electronic countermeasures often made tracking formations of aircraft difficult.  Sound, however, was harder to mask, particularly when your formation consisted of a large number of four-engine bombers and fighter escort.  Such a crowd made a lot of noise, that could be easily detected with relatively cheap equipment.
